Despite all of these brilliant uses of cork in our world, it is also effortless to care for, making it the perfect material for everyday accessory usage. Take a peek at my blog post: How to Care for Cork for more on cork care. And, if you’ve recently spotted a creative use of cork out in the wild, definitely let me know about it in the comments. Inspiration comes from the most unusual places (you can read about my “ah-ha!” moment here), and I am always looking for new ways to get corky!

Sustainable travel may create new opportunities you hadn’t thought of or experiences you’ve never had! Here are my 9 tips on how to travel sustainably:
My Yvonne Tote, GiGi Clutch, and Inizio Satchels are the perfect travel companions. On big trips I fill my GiGi Clutch with all of the essentials: hand sanitizer, wireless headphones (bring your own! The airlines toss borrowed ones into landfills after one use), lip balm, lotion, pen and passport. Then, I slide her into my Yvonne Tote, alongside my wallet, reusable water bottle, phone, blanket scarf, book, and snacks. Upon arrival, I click GiGi’s strap on and sling her crossbody for light days and evenings out. When headed to the beach or pool, I take Yvonne to pile in my towel, cover-up, sunscreen, and hat. On shorter or smaller trips, Inizio is my go-to satchel. Big enough to hold the essentials and keep me hands-free to grab my latte...or a poolside margarita!
If you’ve spent any time hanging out in our little corner of the internet, you’ll know that sustainability, one purse at a time, is our creed here at Paula Parisotto. It should come as no surprise that we want to carry out sustainable practices, not just to our accessories, but also to the way we live our lives, including how we travel.

Whether draped on the body or worn as an accessory, patterns play an important role in visually shaping your body. These tips apply to garments and accessories alike.
For my petite readers, look for smaller patterns that won’t overwhelm your frame. Large patterns tend to enter the room first, and I don’t know about you, but I want to be the one making an entrance, not my wildly patterned pants! Be mindful of small-flowered or polka-dotted prints, as these can appear juvenile on a more petite frame.
Medium-framed ladies will find that medium-sized patterns are most flattering for their shape. And you yep! You guessed it - Larger frames can totally rock those larger patterns!
I know my followers are savvy style mavens, and I am sure you see a theme here - proportions and patterns go hand in hand when choosing flattering fashion.
Patterns are more than just plaids and floral prints, so I put together some tips for using patterns to draw attention to your best *ass*sets (and minimize those areas you’d rather not have all eyes upon!)
Diagonal Lines - Much like the diagonal line created by the strap of a crossbody purse, diagonal lines in a garment’s pattern visually slims the part of the body they cross over. The same goes for diagonal design elements such an asymmetrical stitching, slanted hemlines, flaps, and collars. Anything that works that hard to make me look good without sacrificing carbs is guaranteed to be my design BFF!
Patterns on White Background - This is tricky to work with as patterns overlaid on a white background can visually enlarge a subject, so you must use them intentionally. When used well, you can add curves to areas that need a little boost. So if you are endowed with voluptuous hips but are also a proud member of the IBTC (itty bitty titty committee), then a cleverly placed pattern can give you the appearance of hourglass curves if that’s what you’re going for! It’s all about those balanced proportions!
Patterns on Black Backgrounds - Patterns applied over a black background are visually slimming. Used strategically, they are an excellent tool for reducing the appearance of larger bosoms, tummies and help take a little bounce out of your badonkadonk when needed.
Using Blacks to Slim - speaking of black...if the goal is to visually slim, stick to matte black fabrics. Shiny black fabrics are sexy for sure, but material that screams “All eyes on me!” isn’t usually the most forgiving if the goal is to hide some extra curves!
Leading Lines - The use of vertical lines tends to elongate the area worn over, while horizontal lines widen the areas they are laying over. The exception to this rule is when horizontal lines are thin lines in contrasting colors. Those tricky little lines will confuse the eyes and actually assist in slimming. It’s like a magic wand for your waistline!
Patterned Protection - Lastly, let patterns provide you with some protection when you need it - use patterns over areas of your body that have you feeling a little less confident. You’ll visually confuse the eye and leave you feeling covered when you need it most!

As I researched the best quality cork for crafting my first purse, I learned just how unique it actually was! Cork oaks can be harvested every nine to ten years after reaching maturity - this means in a tree's average 200-year life span, it can be safely gathered 16-20 times over its lifespan. Isn't that incredible? It's also naturally antimicrobial, washable with soap and water, and only gets softer and more supple over time!
Sustainable materials (and really, sustainable lifestyles in general) have become more mainstream in recent years. People recognize the need to take better care of Mother Earth and understand that investing in sustainable products has a long-term positive impact on our environment. Sustainability means less waste in the landfills and better production practices - which in turn means better air quality, water, protection of our wildlife. It's a win-win for everyone, am I right?
Going hand in hand with sustainability is the slow fashion movement. At its core, it is a commitment from both the consumer and the fabricator to respect our planet. For the consumer, it is the practice of buying fewer but better quality items. For fabricators, slow fashion puts into practice using sustainable materials in production, packaging, fabricating in smaller batches, and focusing on quality pieces made to last. Another helpful method is for fabricators to slow their production schedules. This means not focusing on trends but instead on styles that will remain fashionable for long periods.
When brands like mine choose sustainable, slow practices wherever possible, we better protect the planet for future generations! And when consumers prefer to shop from brands like mine, it encourages us all to keep our commitment to preserving the environment! It's true what they say, "When you shop small businesses, the owner does a happy
Luckily for me (and all the other small, slow fashion companies out there), more and more shoppers gravitate toward unique products made from sustainable materials. Unique has its own buzz in the design industry as consumers look for products made from unique materials, have a unique design, are created by unique companies, or come from a unique place. So while the movement for sustainable and slow fashion feels small and well....unique...my fingers are crossed that it will soon become the norm as interest continues to grow!
Speaking of unique places, US-made consumerism is on the rise! While the US isn't really unique, a recent focus on US-made is! In the 1960s, overseas production became a popular choice for many fabrication companies. The US population wasn't concerned about where companies produced their products as long as they could still get what they wanted. Unfortunately, that hurt the US economy! Thankfully the zeitgeist of today is shifting, and many Americans are making US-made product purchases a priority. This is great for our economy and helps leave a smaller environmental footprint as it cuts down unnecessary shipping and transport!
I always say that I didn't choose the Corky Life; the Corky Life chose me...and I am so glad it did! Because of this journey, I have discovered new ways to change the world and met other wonderful people working hard to do the same. If sustainable, slow fashion from a small business made in the USA can do it, so can you!

The recovering overachiever in me struggles with wanting instant success. I mean, I’ve put in the work, the product is brilliant and beautiful, there isn’t really a reason to wait. Success is mine. But that’s a little unrealistic. There is no such thing as overnight success - unless you’re Brittany Spears, and we’ve all seen her MTV Behind the Music, so even the fabulous Brittany had to put in some hard work to get to where she is today.
Here’s the thing - we all start out as little fish in the big sea of whatever new something we are trying to build. So now, I find myself navigating these big, big, BIG waters. Waters of sustainable accessories and e-commerce websites; and swimming through the ever-changing rules of Instagram accounts and Facebook pages. And I am learning to be grateful, especially for all the other fish that come alongside me as I #justkeepswimming.
Reflecting on these past three years has me looking at what I have learned along the way. Throughout it all, I can see three resounding lessons that have shaped me into the businesswoman I am today!
Today I am letting myself dream about what I envision for the next three years of Paula Parisotto. I see a team of good folks doing what they do best. And, friends, they are dressed to the nines, sporting all the hats I used to wear! So what about all that expertise I gained over these last three years? I am using it to build teams, inspire my fellow entrepreneurs, and pouring it into being the best designer I can be!
Naturally, as I celebrate these last three years, I also find myself remembering where it all began...Six years ago, I was a gal with a service business, a dream to create a product to coincide with it, and enough business acumen to know she lacked the design and fabrication skills to make it happen.
But not knowing something has never stopped me from trying something new! Now I have a beautiful bank of aha moments to draw upon anytime I feel discouraged because the last three years has gifted me so very much:
And now, Year Four of Paula Parisotto is already bringing it with the firsts, and I am excited to see where it leads us! For all that has already happened, and for that which is to come...I am so very grateful.
I thought I could, and I did. And so can you. - Reach out any time; I am here to cheer you on as you build your own something new!

Now some of these upcoming suggestions may feel a little old-fashioned, but let’s just call them classic (because that never goes out of style, am I right?). The most respectful way to arrive at any event (be a wedding or even funerals for that matter) is to come looking put-together rather than thrown-together. Some exceptions would be themed weddings or location weddings that call for specific attire. For example, this month, I am styling a wedding whose theme is western and taking place in a corral. The couple has requested jeans for the fellas and boots for all attending. We have also seen a rise in royal-themed weddings where you should most certainly channel your inner Kate Middleton. So it’s time to rock that fascinator with your cocktail gown, Ladies!
But for those of you attending more traditional wedding celebrations this summer, here are some easy style tips to make sure you wedding-guest ready!
Ladies - choose sophisticated fabrics when selecting your dress or blouse for the event (hint: cotton is not one of them). Look at silk, cashmere, crepe, or satin for an elegant feel. Chic jumpers or pantsuits with clean lines are also excellent choices for weddings. Try to keep the flashy looks to a minimum - this is the bride’s day, and all eyes should be on her. This means avoiding a plunging neckline or super short hemline - those looks are great for the club, but let’s keep the girls and gams undercover on a wedding day!
If you’re looking for the right handbag to bring along to hold those essentials like your phone and lipstick, a sleek clutch is always a win-win. Its slim profile won’t add bulk to your outfit, and they always slip easily under a chair for safekeeping. If you need one that will look good no matter what look you are sporting, check out my GiGi - my Gilded Gator-Embossed Cork Clutch is perfect if you’re looking for a sexy plus one at your side!
You’ve probably heard that it’s never a good idea to wear white or off-white, as that is considered disrespectful to the bride. However, all-white weddings are on the rise, so feel free to don your brightest whites if the couple indicates this is their wedding theme! I would also caution against wearing all black unless the wedding is a black-tie affair.
Heels and sandals are always appropriate for a wedding, but friends, I have to drop a personal PSA here: flip-flops are not sandals. Leave those at home! Do choose shoes that compliment your outfit and are comfortable to hit the dance floor in! Shawls or cute lightweight coats are always a good accessory to bring along for after nightfall when the temperature drops.
Fellas - you guys have it pretty easy. When in doubt, a suit and tie is always a good idea! Save your black suits for black-tie events and opt for one in a neutral tone such as beige (for summer), grey, or navy. Paired with a long-sleeve button-front shirt, a nice tie, well-fitted slacks is always a good choice. The bonus of a suit is that if you arrive and everyone is sporting a more dressed-down look, simply leaving the dress jacket in the car lets you blend right in with the rest of the crowd. We have seen a trend in men’s dress that leans more casual - this can be fine, but avoid denim - it just sends the message that you didn’t try too hard when choosing your outfit for the day!
Shoes and belts should always match, and try to choose socks that match your trousers. NO WHITE SOCKS, my friends! Shoes make the man, so choose a suitable pair for the suit or pants you have selected. If your favorite shoes look a little scuffed, a little petroleum jelly on a soft cloth will lightly buff away scratches, making them look as good as new!
In general, follow any requested dress codes set forth by the couple. Always iron out wrinkles (or my favorite lazy hacks 1) hang my outfit in the bathroom while I shower and the steam do its thing or 2) toss my garments in the dryer with an ice cube or two. Either works like a charm!) and avoid rips and tears in your pants. When in doubt, ere on the side of overdressed - it’s always better than being the only one underdressed!

If you’re like me, hunched behind my computer in my comfy COVID-wear, working to keep business as norm as possible, I may have added some extra curves to my frame with a couple (read: several) unwanted pounds. Days of staying put at home had me indulging in daily breakfast treats with my coffee and Margaritas with my Mexican food. The personal trainer in me says, “Get up and get back at it, girl!” while the personal stylist in me says, “Meh, it’s been a rough year, give yourself some grace…”
Maybe your wellness goals are totally on track...and Bravo! But perhaps you’d want to choose a suit to best flatter your frame no matter how fit you are! No matter your shape or size or how you got there, here are a few figure-flattering tips to choosing swimwear:
In the words of the indomitable Queen, “Fat Bottomed Girls Make the Rocking World Go Round!” Do you have a wide bottom or thicker thighs? (I think the kids these days call it thiccc, and it’s a good thing!) Choose a swim bottom with a high-cut leg opening straying from bottoms that cut you mid-hip. A darker, solid-colored bottom and lighter colored or patterned tops help flatter your booty.
If your shape is slim and straight, choose an embellished bottom (like ruffles or patterns) to add some curves to those skinny French hips! Adding a high-cut leg opening is also flattering on flatter tushies.
Bustlines are one of the most complained about features of swimsuits. More petite chested gals feel uncomfortable when the bodice gaps and straps slip without something substantial to hold them up. Larger busted ladies bemoan the squishing, spillage, and uncomfortable underwires.
If you are a member of the (Itty Bitty Titty Committee), choose a v-neck or sweetheart neckline for a flattering fit. Embellished, patterned, or lighter colored tops add some visual volume and, paired with solid or patterned bottoms, helps balance body proportions.
Women with a bountiful bosom should choose a well-supported, simple top with good coverage (don’t forget the side-boob!) Darker colors on top help to balance a larger chest with a smaller bottom.
To help create a waistline, choose a suit with strategic color blocking or cutouts. A high-cut leg opening also helps create a visual waist on more rectangular torsos. If your covid pounds have settled around the middle creating a larger tummy, suits with a side tie, ruching or gathering are always flattering. And as always, you can’t go wrong with diagonal lines to lengthen and slim your frame!
Broad shoulders always look good in one-shoulder styles or thicker straps which help minimize the appearance of width. If your point of insecurity is your arms, there are lots of cute styles with sleeves available. Pretty much any area you feel more comfortable covered has options, from flowing tops to skirted bottoms!
Whether you’re hitting the beach or lounging at the pool, remember that every body is a good body, a beautiful body! Treat your body with gratitude for all that it does for you as you enjoy that Summer Vitamin D! And when you hit the beach, don’t forget the Yvonne Tote is perfect for tucking a couple of towels, snacks, h20 and a bottle of sunscreen away for a day of fun in the sun! I’d love to see photos of you this summer doing your thing - if these tips helped you find some swimwear that you love, will you share a photo and tag me on Instagram at #paulaparisottostyle?
P.S. That's me, on a California beach, in my itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka-dot bikini circa 1973. The lady in the other photo? My grandma, GiGi, whom my GiGi Clutch is named after.

And we are all doing it here together in the good ol’ U S of A!

If you are anything like me, you’re a consumer who knows that making impactful change starts with where you spend your money! Taking simple steps towards mindful buying of consumer goods is great for our planet which, in turn, is great for the people, plants and animals that live on it.
]]>Sustainable Fashion, Fast Fashion and Slow Fashion are all terms that many consumers are, in the least, familiar with. To further your knowledge, click each term to read my more in-depth posts, otherwise, read on for the condensed version of each term.
Sustainable Fashion
Defined as clothing, shoes and accessories that are manufactured, marketed and utilized by the consumer in the most sustainable manner possible, taking into consideration both environmental and socio-economic aspects. Purchasing from theses responsibility-minded brands is the quickest way to ensure our natural resources’ slowing of overconsumption.
Fast Fashion
The design, manufacturing, and marketing of rapidly produced clothing. The replication of trendy styles, made with low-quality materials designed to bring inexpensive new styles to the public.
Slow Fashion
A commitment to buying better quality, longer-lasting garments from brands whose practices focus on manufacturing with the fair treatment of people, animals, and the planet in mind.
With more and more consumers wanting to learn about and buy slow and sustainable, many fashion brands are responding by working hard to make positive environmental and socio-economic impacts. Here are just a few of my favs:
Women's wear brand with a focus on perfecting essentials, inspired by thoughtful tailoring, expert details, and quality fabrics.
US manufactured men's and women's clothing that’s durable, not disposable. High quality, built to last, straightforward styles that endures beyond trends.
Outfitting you with the quality staples you’ll love and want in your closet for years to come. Each piece is hand-signed by the sewer.
Women's and children's brand that takes a holistic approach to sustainability considering the full life-cycle of our clothing. They use non-toxic, natural and certified Organic materials that are easy on your skin and the environment.
There are many, many, many more. (Like mine.) Simply search sustainable, slow fashion, eco-friendly or ethical fashion brands and find some favs of your own. Then share them below. Together, we can do more to make positive changes.

When I first opened my eyes to sustainable living, I directed my attention toward preserving our natural resources. Minimizing the impact of our carbon footprint felt like an excellent place to start. I quickly began researching swaps I could make in our day-to-day lives. I started with trading harsh chemicals for those labeled with natural ingredients. Our foods were switched to organic and locally sourced whenever possible. Falling in love with cork for its sustainability (and beauty!) didn’t just launch Paula Parisotto accessories line; it set me on a path toward learning everything I could about running an ethical business. But the more I strove to build a company based on ethical principles of slow fashion, the more I learned about brands who monetize the green movement for their personal gain. Greenwashing is the false marketing of products as good for the environment as an effort to appear more environmentally sound (and prey upon consumers’ good intentions).
To put it more simply: companies who “greenwash” often spend more money on making consumers think their practices are sustainable than actually making them so. Sometimes it’s as suggestive as a product name; others go so far as to falsify records.
As bothered as I am by the practice of misrepresenting a brand as green when it is anything but, seeing red about the issue is only helpful if I use it to teach you how to avoid it! Below are some examples of products you have probably heard of that use greenwashing tactics to sell products. Sometimes the first step to recognizing greenwashing is to see it in action.
Cleaning Materials
One of the most common products to abuse greenwashing as a marketing ploy is cleaning products. It’s no secret that harsh chemicals will destroy germs, and using them was the standard of clean for decades. As we learned more about the long-term effects of producing these products and using them in our homes, the need for green alternatives has never been more urgent.
Windex is a prime example of greenwashing. SC Johnson’s Windex Vinegar Ocean Plastic bottle claims to be the world’s first window-cleaner bottle made from 100% recycled ocean plastic. Calling it ocean plastic is pretty misleading as it’s not pulling plastic from the ocean; it’s actually sourced from plastic banks from Haiti, the Philippines, and Indonesia. What they are doing isn’t all bad; the plastic they are using is ocean-bound. So it is helpful to our environment, but its claim makes it seem like they are doing more than they are. I don’t know about you, but I would feel pretty good about saving plastic from going INTO the ocean just as much as I would about retrieving plastic debris! To top it off, their claims of “non-toxic” were refuted in a lawsuit from last June showing that the chemicals in their products are indeed harmful to people, pets and the environment.
Fortunately, a simple swap of vinegar and warm water will do wonders to clean glass, and those two products are non-toxic (and super affordable!)
In the case of Windex, if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Take a look at products that are spending a lot of money to show off how “green” they are - chances are, the more they spend letting you know about their good deeds, the less they are spending on actually taking care of the environment.
When it comes to cleaning products, here are a few tried and true brands that put their money where it counts - back into the environment!
Some other recent greenwashing cases you may have heard of include Starbucks’ straw-free lids made of more plastic than the previous straws and lids combined, and Comcast’s “PaperLESS is More” campaign spared no paper in its marketing. Greenwashing is an epidemic across all major industries!
The Seven Sins of Greenwashing
Sustainable Jungle released the seven sins of greenwashing to identify when a product might be using dishonest marketing. The following list was published on their website in Spring 2020.
Avoiding Greenwashing
Fortunately, as the problem has become more widespread, so have the restrictions being placed on corporations by the Federal Trade Commission. As consumers, just becoming more mindful and committed to researching products before purchasing them will go a long way. Read labels carefully - while companies might get away with some flubbing their advertising, it is illegal to incorrectly list ingredients. Just make sure that the organic product you are buying has ingredients that you easily recognize!
Look for third-party certifications such as USDA certified organic or the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC). The steps needed for certification can be time-consuming and costly. This means a corporation’s commitment to being certified can add confidence when making an informed purchase decision.
What does this mean for the Fashion Industry?
I have shared some of the importance of purchasing from sustainable brands over the last few weeks. Still, I wanted to help you identify greenwashing within the fashion industry as well. Because of our love as a culture of being on-trend, the fashion industry has been able to fly a little fast and loose when building brands rooting in ethical practices. The truth is, when we think of sustainability, we think of cars and chemical production and purchasing organic food. We aren’t considering that the item of clothing we are wearing could potentially be produced in a way that negatively impacts the environment.
If you are concerned with impacting sustainable change in all areas of your life, clothes are an excellent place to start!
Seriously though, there are clothing brands that will keep you fashionable and feeling good about your carbon footprint at the same time. In the weeks to come, I'll write an article praising some of my favorite fashion brands working hard to make a positive environmental impact; fashion brands standing up against fast fashion with classic styles that are both body-inclusive and fair trade.
Do you have a favorite fair trade fashion brand I should know about? How about a tried and true green product you can’t live without? Tell me in the comments below!

Truthfully, I don’t take the fast track for much of anything (except for those pivots the universe keeps throwing at us!) But, I believe there is one area worth lacing up those runners and racing toward like our lives depend on it (and really, they do!) I’m talking about the slow fashion movement. If you are anything like me, you’re a consumer who knows that making impactful change starts with where you spend your money! Taking simple steps towards sustainable fashion is kind to your wallet (sustainable means it lasts!) and great for our environment.

Understanding Sustainability
Sustainability is a broad term used as an umbrella over many categories such as eco-friendly, green, ethical, fair-trade, and slow-fashion. Know your values and what you are looking for, then check company websites to see their stance on the issues that matter most to you.
Purchasing from responsibility-minded, sustainable brands is the quickest way to ensure our natural resources’ slowing of overconsumption. But what is a responsibility-minded and sustainable brand? In part, it's a company committed to maximizing its use of resources so that there is minimal waste. They employ artisans and workers paying them a fair and ethical wage while ensuring their work environment is safe.
One quick caveat...be mindful of greenwashing - this is a marketing technique where a brand inflates (or is downright untruthful) about their product being green or ethical. There are some watchdog resources available to help you identify companies that prey on this method of marketing.
Steps to Fast Track Your Sustainable Fashion Choices
Whether you are new to this journey or have been traveling the road to sustainability for some time, keep in mind that changing our consumption culture is a long game. Small steps go a long way. Don’t throw out your entire closet worth of clothes, and feel like you have to start with a brand new wardrobe! Simply make choices for new items that meet your goals and purchase from brands that create things you will be proud to wear! If you have a favorite sustainable fashion brand, tell me in the comments! I am constantly building my go-to list for any future fashion needs!

In order to best assist you in choosing your most flattering shoes, we best start with an anatomy lesson! Here’s a diagram to help:
And, now for the assistance. If you have:
Thick Ankles - Wear a flat or slim mid-high heel with a low vamp and pointed toe box to slim the look of your ankles. Steer clear of ankle straps and ankle booties. They add visual weight.
Shorter Stature or Short Legs - Follow the same rules as above except, those heels, I hate to say it 'cause I adore a sky high heel however; no higher than 2 -3", anything taller will make you look way out of balance.
Curvy or Thick Legs - Balance and visually slim your legs with a wedge or block style heel paired with a low vamp and pointed-toe box.
Long Legs - Your most flattering shoe has a kitten, wedge or block heel, a mid-high vamp, a rounded toe box and a T or ankle strap. Of course, a shoe with just a couple of these features will benefit you as well.
Small Feet - I recommend a flat or kitten heel with a low vamp and pointed toe box.
Large and/or Long Feet - Wedge or block heels nicely balance larger feet. For a long foot, try a mid vamp with a rounded or square toe box.
Wide Feet - Your best look will be a high heel and low vamp with a pointed toe box.
Narrow Feet - Opt for a slim mid-high heel, with a high vamp and ankle strap. If you also have thin legs and build, a T-strap or ankle strap is a flattering look paired with a high vamp. These styles will look best on you with a round or square toe.
As an accessories designer and personal stylist, sharing tips for how to dress your best is one of my favorite topics, so here are a few bonus lessons for ya:
Want the look of a longer and/or slimmer leg? Wear a shoe color that matches your skin tone. Alternatively, matching your shoe color to that of your pants also creates the same effect. If you are choosing a pointed toe, look for ones that are only slightly pointed. Something more severe can take on a costumed look. Eh-em....I Dream of Jeannie.
Where are all my petite ladies at? Listen up! Steer clear of severely rounded toes, flats and heels. They can visually shorten your stature and appear juvenile. Also, stray from block heels which can cause your legs and stature to look stocky. It has been said, “the higher the heel the closer to heaven”, however, ultra high heels on a petite gal simply looks out of proportion (And cause a forward pitch that can wreak havoc on your back.) Embrace your stature and opt for heels no taller than 2 - 3” inches.
And one little caution.....don't wear shoes that cause you pain (no matter how cute they are!) If your feet are miserable, then it will show through in your attitude and altitude, 'cause you'll be hunched over in pain! (If not at the time, later on down the road.Trust me on this!) Remember, the goal here iis to look AND feel fabulous!

One of the most harmful aspects of this fast fashion movement is its effect on our environment. Manufacturing produces waste and consumption of our natural resources. When production increases to meet growing market demands, naturally, waste also increases, further taxing our environment. One of the increasing concerns to fast fashion is the level of landfill pollution due to the use of toxic chemicals and dangerous dyes used in fast material production. Trendy by definition means an item is only desirable for a short period. Quickly discarded clothes typically end up in already overfilled landfills. Unfortunately, cheaply made doesn’t mean it doesn’t last, so these discarded items leave an astounding large carbon footprint for such a short shelf life - not to mention the waste caused by unused remnants that become discarded after production. Knowing these disturbing truths inspired me to use every possible scrap of cork material to ensure minimal waste. Our hand-made Remi Earrings are made from remnants to reduce what we discard after production!
It’s not just the environment that suffers as garment workers also suffer under the fast fashion production model strain. Frequently we hear of workers being overworked, underpaid, and exposed to harmful chemicals under poor working conditions. My brand was built on our inherent human right to have the freedom to live life without restraints, so I am committed to seeing all humanity have access to fair and humane working conditions. We can all contribute to this mission by committing to only purchasing garments made in ethical manufacturing plants. I will happily pay more for the desired item knowing that its purchase provides fair pay to the artisan that helped bring it to life!
So how did we get to this place of mass consumption, you may ask? Historically fashion used to be produced in four seasonal collections. It makes sense, right? We need different styles based on the weather of each season. But with fast fashion, many brands produce weekly collections ensuring consumers never tire of the styles and have them readily available (nothing quite like instant gratification, am i right?) EXCEPT for the constant pursuit of MORE results in overconsumption, excess waste, and harm to the environment.
Listen, I don’t want to leave you with a feeling of doom and gloom! I’m all about teaching some hard truths, but I am even more about sharing with you how to avoid this trap of trendy threads with something more sustainable (and still look good while you save the planet!) The opposition of fast fashion is….wait for it….slow fashion!
Slow fashion is a commitment to buying better quality, longer-lasting garments from brands whose practices focus on manufacturing with the fair treatment of people, animals, and the planet in mind. Just typing those words right now felt like a breath of fresh air! We can combat this wave of consumption with intentional buying choices that apply not only to the garments and accessories themselves but also to how companies market and package their products! More and more consumers want to make purchases from slow and sustainable brands. The more we make our voice heard, the greater the push for brands to shift to a sustainable approach to showing up in the world. Share this post with your friends, and together let’s get the word out about the kind of impact we can make with our fashion purchases!
Quality cork fabric or "leather" is highly durable and naturally resistant to dirt, dust, stains and water making your cork accessories (or floors, furnishings and walls) a breeze to maintain.
]]>When cleaning is necessary, simply:
Honestly, I wash my cork bags right in the sink. Check this out.......
Good to know.........Like animal leather, cork leather will get even softer, more supple and develop a beautiful patina as it reacts to the oils in our skin and the environment. Unlike most leathers, however, there’s no conditioning required!
For personal and home cork accessories that do include animal leather details, stain resistance, cleaning and conditioning can be achieved with a quality leather product. I'm a fan of Earth friendly, family run, US made, small batch brands like Smiths All Natural leather balm.

Empty it Out
We’re talking down to the crumbs. Give it a hearty shake and make sure there isn’t anything lurking in the corners. Wipe out the insides if needed and use a gentle cloth to remove any dirt from the purse’s outside surfaces.
Sort it Out
I like to place the contents into groups of items that seem to go together. Chapstick, lotion, and lip gloss set those aside. Pens, pencils, and notepad go in another pile and so on. Keep only the essential items.
Throw it Out
Trash the little unnecessary bits, recycle old papers, file receipts, and tuck the other items you’ve collected into their respective homes. Don’t you feel organized already with those items put where they belong?
Put it Back
Now take the items that you use daily and place them neatly back into your favorite purse (for me, it’s usually my Yvonne Convertible Cork Tote). I like to use small zippered bags (eh-em, GiGi versatile clutch) to conveniently hold and keep organized my most often reached for items.
Repeat as Necessary
I recommend doing these 4 easy steps every other week, or at least monthly, to help keep your purse organized. You’ll be amazed at how this super simple step can bring a sense of freedom to your every day.
The best part of this process..........these steps work to clean up ANY space that frequently becomes a catch-all for odds and ends. Wallet looking a bit fat (and not from rolls of cash)? Thin it out with the same steps above. The kitchen drawer won’t close? It works there too!

Unique, sustainable, soft, durable, washable, hypoallergenic, lightweight, water, fade, moisture, mildew and dust resistant. (Shew, say that five times fast.)
But what are we talking about? Only my fav eco-friendly "fabric": Cork!
]]>
As a textile, cork stands out due to its unique look. In fact, its uniqueness is what turned this personal stylist into an accessories designer. (Intrigued? Take a quick detour.)
Here are a few more of the features that made me say, cork is "in the bag"....literally:
I'm a big fan, and think you will be, too. In fact, see and feel cork leather before investing in a bag, belt or earring. We're happy to send you some samples. Free of course! Simply email CustomerService@PaulaParisotto.com
If you like fun facts…
Most cork oak trees (Quercus Suber for you botanists and dendrophilias.) are found in Portugal, which is where we source ours from! I spent two years researching and wear testing cork fabrics until I finally landed on the most luxurious, most durable cork in the world. Yes, the world! I AM that picky.
The industry is regulated by the government of Portugal to make sure that skilled workers harvest the cork ethically and sustainably, causing no injury to the trees or the environment. In fact, the cork oak is the only tree that regenerates itself after each harvest! Each tree lives 150-200 years, making them havens for wildlife, including 3 endangered species: the Iberian Lynx, Iberian Imperial Eagle and Barbary Deer.

Circumstances have not permitted me to spend my full week at the lake this month (yet!) however, as if the lake knew of my forthcoming plans, during our late December visit I had a massively magical a-ha moment.
It hit me while on our morning walk. "I GOT IT!!"
"Got what?" my hubby asks.
Excitedly, I answer "My Word of the Year!!!!!"
A bit premature as I had not yet relaxed, reflected and planned but there it was, dropping out of the sky on the back of a sweet, pink, winged Sicilian miniature donkey named Lucia. (It's truly how it happened.)
What's the word you ask...........Choose
I didn't even have to choose it, it chose me. And, it's perfection! Choose. Yes! In any given moment I get to choose. Think about the infinite number of choices we are faced with on the daily, some inconsequential and others, monumental. SO many choices. SO many opportunities. Opportunities to create a positive or negative impact on my life. Choose is big.........and I am big on taking it on.
Interested in learning what my Word of The Year was in '18. '19 and '20? Click here. I'm interested in knowing if you choose (see, there it is, another chance to choose) a Word of the Year. And if so, what is this years?

2) Is it reversible? Every guy I know loves when he can get a two-for-one kinda deal. That screwdriver that flips from Philips head to flat head? Sold! Two for One Big Mac? He’s in! A belt that is two colors and easily switched between the two? Now that’s a deal. It takes up less room in the closet (and suitcase!), not to mention makes life easier for that man who likes to keep his look minimalist.
3) How rigid is it? If a belt is too stiff, it won’t conform to the body, making it uncomfortable to wear. Men may not share an hourglass shape of their female counterparts, but they certainly aren’t round like a tin can. A well-made belt should adapt to all bodies. Want to try a quick test? Lay your belt flat on the floor - it shouldn’t be straight; you should see the body mimicking curves.
4) Weight probably doesn’t figure into many men’s minds when choosing a belt, but unless he’s a 5-time rodeo champ, he likely doesn’t want to wear a turquoise studded belt that weighs as much as his toddler. The less weight carried about the middle; the more his body will thank him. A heavy belt is torture on the hips and back (look, if you ARE a rodeo champ, let’s talk, I’ll design you a belt that looks just as good and won’t have you limping around like a Rodeo clown!)
Let me introduce you to the Lee Reversible Belt, named after THE jockey for the world record frog jump (34 years and standing baby!), my Great Uncle Lee, a.k.a. Lee the Frogger. Calaveras County Fair doesn’t give out heavyweight belts (but who wants to wear them anyway?), so I crafted a belt that was worthy of my favorite champ. While my belt doesn’t have Uncle Lee’s famous Lee the Frogger emblazoned on it like the one he always wore, it does have all of Uncle Lee’s charisma and character packed into its one-of-a-kind style. It checks off all the boxes for style, quality, and function!
First up, it’s reversible! Soft natural cork on one side and veg-tanned leather on the other. Both sides soften and patina over time, adding to their long wearability and beauty. Cork is naturally unique as it comes from a tree making sure no two pieces are ever the same and your belt uniquely yours. Plus, cork is just as durable as medium grain leathers, yet it is a natural and sustainable product. Fun fact, cork trees can be harvested every nine to ten years and will yield 16 harvests on average in their lifetime! Talk about sustainability!
It's sleek and slimline design is both fashionable and lightweight (less than half a pound!). And maybe best of all, it’s 100% American made, letting us put money back in our economy (which is needed now, more than ever!) Designed in California and handcrafted here in the USA (Connecticut), this is a belt crafted with every man in mind!

My week of reflection is done at our lake house. Water soothes my soul and grounds me in a way that solid earth never could. While much of my week is spent in semi-solitude (Marley and me), letting words and thoughts wash over me, I will admit to a slight Netflix addiction...so I will have the company of New Girl to lighten my deep contemplation!
Armed with snacks (Wheat Thins slathered in PB&J...mmm), steaming cups of tea, my Pilot G-2 pens, last year’s planner (OMG...if you need a planner, check out My Shining Year Life Goals Workbook, by Leonie Dawson. It’s pure GOLD!) and calendar (The Happy Planner, because who isn’t happy when they have a plan?!) along with a fresh copy of each, and I'll be ready to rock ‘n roll...or hum and snuggle as the case may be... Despite my cozy set up, this is one of my most productive weeks of the year. This week of work sets up an entire year of building and growing!
This process has been on repeat for the last six years. Sit, review, think, feel, create, write, organize, snack and plan...then put those plans in motion! I know I am not alone in having a review and planning sesh (I see you out there, all you Type-A, First Borns and Virgos!) but how many also attach a New Year Resolution to their plan? Me...I choose a word.
A Word of the Year. One little Word. It’s like a promise to myself to let this word work it’s magic in my life as it shapes and directs my daily actions throughout the year.
2018 - Freedom. A seed planted in my heart in December of 2017, became my anthem for the entirety of the following year.
2019 - Become. This year I wrote my story of how I grew from a wellness industry executive into a BRAND. I let myself truly become everything that I was meant to be, which included a renewed focus on becoming a better, healthier version of me. You know, letting go of the past so that I could be in charge of my present, and becoming an all-around badass boss babe!
2020 - More. My desire was for more adventure. More self-care. More mindfulness. More abundance. More moments that take my breath away, and more opportunities for gratitude. More clients. More growth for my brand. More hikes. More days at the beach. More tacos and definitely more margaritas.
Looking back at my "Thank you Universe, more please!" list, I initially felt jipped. I didn't have more of any of the items on my list. I has less, far less. Less adventures. Less personal styling clients. Less abundance.
However, reading on, I realized that I had more (FAR more) of most of the items on my list. The universe DID give me more. It just took me to mindfully pivot away from "this is challenging, not what I want or had planned" and be willing to embrace "this is different but maybe better". In doing so, I got my more but more better.
As for my word of the year after the fa la la la longest year eh-ver.....stay tuned.

High on the list…….lightweight. Once you start adding all the items you carry, that bag can get real heavy real fast. Not only is that uncomfortable, but it's also terrible on your posture and puts undue stress on your shoulders, neck and back!
Speaking of comfortable, non-slip straps are always a must. Nothing is more disappointing (or uncomfortable!) than a cute bag that constantly slides off your shoulder.
Finding a purse that is roomy enough to hold your daily essentials while not being too big and bulky is always a plus. I'm not just talking about your favorite facial mist - you want a bag that will hold a laptop or iPad and maybe your current reading material. (BTW...I recently read “The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck” and let me tell ya, I'm now focusing my F's on the important stuff. Give it a read.)
Form AND function are a must. Who wants a good-looking bag that lacks function or a functional bag that is, well, funky looking? No woman ever. The best bags have just enough pockets in all the right places and is cute to boot.
I am all about quality over quantity (and hope that you are too...#slowfashion). Quality materials (sustainable is an awesome choice!) and quality made. Being a US citizen and US manufacturer, I am partial to Made in the USA, however quality and ethical manufacturers can be found in many parts of the world.
When you find a purse that hits all the above points.......Jackpot! Imagine this purse also carrying you through your workday into your evening out? Oh, and it being the best travel buddy, keeping all your personal travel items close? And what if this purse could also convert from small to large in an instant, is washable (you know your purse goes wherever you go....ewwww!), is hypoallergenic and you could beat a fire out with it (true story)?
Does this unicorn bag exist? Yep! Her name is Yvonne. She's hand-crafted of luxury Portuguese cork (sustainable-check!) which makes her SUPER lightweight. She's uniquely comfortable to carry and converts in a jiffy to hold a little or a lot. Her clean and classic lines are a form and function marriage made where unicorns roam. Dirt, dust and water roll right off of her and ink, lipstick and wine are washed off under a faucet. Quality made in the USA, Yvonne is your purse unicorn. And, she was just released in a delicious shade of navy blue!
Yvonne's exterior pocket and three interior pockets are enough for most however, if you crave further organization, pair Yvonne up with a felt purse organizer like those found by the makers on Etsy. Then get ready to have the following convo on the regular:
"Girl, I LOVE your purse!"
"Thanks. It has pockets!"
So tell me, did I hit all of your on the go must-haves when choosing a purse? If I missed one, drop me a note and let me know what you look for when adding a new bag to your lifestyle.

A fashion trend is a style that becomes hip to the masses. They begin as simple ideas traveling the world influencing our choices. And who comes up with these ideas? These guys........
Designers:
Inspired by travel, music, movies, current events, history and a plethora of other influences, designers create seasonal looks to send down Fashion Week runways which occur twice a year in four fashion capitals of the world: Milan, Paris, New York, and London.
Fashion Elites:
Fashion editors, celebrities, models and other stylish elites attend Fashion Week in anticipation of seeing what the minds of the designers have created. From the simply outrageous (Like seriously, who in the actual H. E. Double L is going to wear that?) to the classics with a fresh twist, they'll pass along all that passed before them.
Fashion Influencers:
Lesser known designers (like myself), stylists (That's me too!), bloggers and buyers attend bi-annual fashion conferences to gather intel about styles that have surged to the top on their way to becoming the next big trend. We then share these insights with our customers, clients and followers.
Celebrities/Musicians/Artists:
Although most celebrities and musicians are influenced directly by the runways (or what their stylist delivers to their dressing rooms), many influence fashion all on their own. Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Steven Tyler, Madonna, Mondrian, Monet and lest not ignore the Kardashians, fan clubber or not, they defiantly make an impact on fashion trends.
Everyday Folk:
You and I can even have a huge impact on style. Okay, maybe not actually you and I but those we see on the street whom define themselves by their wardrobes, wearing out of the box, original looks consisting of mismatched patterns and styles, over or undersized garments and accessories, layers upon layers or barely theres that may cause us scratch our heads and think, "Hmmmmmm!" yet provide big time designers fresh inspiration.
So, again, an idea comes from someone or somewhere, is created and then viewed via runways, street style and/or print and electronic media. A style becomes a trend if it is widely accepted by the masses. If that trend has real staying power, it becomes a classic. (A single strand of pearls is always in style thanks to trendsetter Audrey Hepburn!) Styles that carry only a smidgen of interest are coined fads and fizzle out fast. (think acid washed jeans) an styles that fall flat on the masses, simply die away. (Eh-em, Lady Gaga's meat dress!)
And there you have it, fashion trends and the who behind them.
]]>It wasn’t just a lack of knowledge about chemical exposure that plagued early American fashion, women were often subjected to painful style trends known to cause health issues. From rib crushing corsets that caused shortness of breath and fainting spells (to which the solution was to design a fainting couch. WHAT?!) and back-breaking crinolines, which aside from hiding a herd of goats under your skirt, I can’t see any point to wearing, women have been suffering for fashion since the ancient Greeks (thanks to them we have neck-breaking platform shoes that STILL haven’t totally gone out of vogue!)
Even the not so distant fashion trend of the skinny jean was often worn so tight they caused nerve damage! Pair them with some toe crushing pointed toe heels and you could hobble through your day looking cute while feeling terrible.
I say “NO MORE!” The idea that pain is beauty is a trend that needs to die. Our health matters and feeling good is the only beauty tip you need to be on-trend in now and into 2021. (Come on 2021!!!!) Let’s take the pain out of fashion, by skipping those trends that can cause long term damage (I’m looking at you jeans that like to be all up in my business!) and opt for some solutions to take the pain out of feeling fashionable.
Even the cutest of comfortable and supportive flats can still cause pain. You can alleviate your trouble spots with inserts like these from Foot Petals. From the ball of the foot to back or bottom of heel pain, they’ve been my solution of choice for my personal styling clients. They also work great in boots and heels which means your search for the perfect shoe may just be one you already own!
Keeping blister-free when wearing a sneaker or flat can be problematic, and seeing socks peeking out around the ankle can distract from your overall look. I am a fan of the odor-free (and comfy) Gekks. They are antimicrobial, sweat, and odor-reducing no show socks and they are my go-to for a comfortable sock-free look!
A more stable stiletto is every woman’s dream. It’s no secret, I adore heels. I mean, have you seen pics of my closet? What I don’t love is sinking into the grass or twisting around in the gravel and potentially breaking my neck. Stabilize your block and stiletto heels with clear, stick-on, flexible Grasswalkers. I keep a pair in my car so that I am ready for any unexpected terrain I might encounter at a wedding or gathering with friends.
Listen, ladies, we need to talk about a sensitive topic here. We’ve all been there, a sneeze, a giggle fest with the girls, squatting down to retrieve a dropped item...and then we feel it. Years of having babies, age, and forgetting to do those kegel exercises, means that leaks happen. Speax absorbent panties replace pantyliners, keep you dry, are machine washable, and comfortable. No more uncomfortable bunching by my ladybits? Sign me up!
Did you know that earring pull on your earlobes is one of the top three fashion fails on your health? Lighten up that load with featherweight earrings, like ones made of, you guessed it, cork! They make a statement while being so comfortable, most people forget they are wearing them! I promise I’m not pulling your ear here (LOLOLOL) - If you happen to want some of your own, lucky for you, I know a gal….Check out all of my reversible, customizable styles, colors and handy-dandy “Which Style Flatters my Face Shape?” Guide and give your lobes a lift.
Unless you are built like Fred Flintstone, your body isn’t cylindrical. You have beautiful curves and your belt should be flexible enough to accommodate those curves without causing pain. Lay your most worn belt (or that of your hubby’s or significant other) flat on the floor. Does it curve? It SHOULD! If not, boy have I got the solution for you! My Lee Reversible AND Unisex belt will not only hug your curves but is supremely lightweight. Who knew a belt could be (should be) healthy for your body.
Ps. If you want to do more research on the top three most dangerous fashion trends for your health, take a look at some of the issues caused by wearing:
-Stilettos - long term use can cause severe back pain, ingrown toenails (yuck!), and arthritis in your feet.
-Skinny jeans - when worn too tight, they are known to be a source of nerve pain and sometimes yeast infections (double yuck!)
-Heavy jewelry - earrings that pull on your lobes, stretching the hole will make wearing cute studs, and other style earrings impossible. You could even tear the hole clear through. Ouch!
If you have any other fashion favs or saves, I’d love to hear them. Drop them in a comment below!

Nonetheless, social distancing did have it’s advantages when it came to fashion…
For the last two months, I've practically lived in three sets of workout gear (hello functional comfort!) This encouraged me to make time for daily fitness since I was already dressed for it. I have no doubt my wallet was happy about the savings, but I am sure the rest of my wardrobe was shouting “Wear me! Wear me!”
Whether is was pj's, sweats, t-shirts or tights wearing them has helped us save on water bills, soap, electricity, and time. For those living alone (I bet that wasn’t easy. Thanks for sacrificing for the health of others friend!), you may have worn the same outfit day after day knowing your cat wasn’t going to tell anyone!
Some people got creative, repurposing old bras and leggings into masks. You know I love me some repurposed fashion, so this was probably my favorite trend to come out of the lockdown!
Speaking of repurposing, how many of you took this time to do a deep clean of your closet? Um, you know I did! It’s my favorite anytime activity.
Spending time cleaning out my closet, trying on new looks, mixing patterns, and updating old looks with layered jewelry and unique accessories left me feeling so fresh and stylish. It felt like I had a whole new wardrobe but without the cost.
Maybe you didn’t get around to a good ol’ spring clean and organizing of your closet. If you are feeling inspired to do so, click here for steps to audit your wardrobe. Once you find that an organized closet feels good and you want more uncluttered spaces in your life, here is a link to audit your purse! Warning! You may find unexpected treasures, and when you do, you have to come back and let us know. One reader found a $20 bill in her coat pocket, so if that isn’t an incentive to organize, I don’t know what is!
When you are going through your closet, try on the items you have decided to keep. Playing dress-up isn’t just for little girls! Making decisions on what to keep should be tied to how the piece makes you feel. My blog is chocked full of guides for figure-flattering styling and ways to enhance your, ahem, ASSets.
I know for many folks, money is tight. COVID-19 has interrupted our means of work, and dropping hard-earned cash on spring and summer fashion trends might feel frivolous. So, I've put together some DIY styles to help you strut your socially distanced self in on-trend style.
Have any affordable style DIY's that you want to share? I love hearing your ideas for finding fashion in unexpected places! Let me know in the comments below!

I mean, I could make a pretty solid case for cork’s washability and natural antimicrobial properties (more intriguing than ever, right?).
Or I could tell you about how my Lee belts are adjustable so you can be confident that your Tiger King binge-fest and quarantine snack sesh can be enjoyed in adaptable comfort.
And GiGi, well, pair her with the long adjustable leather strap and she makes a stylish flask fanny pack for those long distance trips from your bedroom to the bathroom and back...so maybe, just maybe, cork IS an essential service....
But until I can get the government on board with cork being essential, I have taken notice of all of the innovative ways business owners are adjusting to our current (or is it our new?) norm. I recently heard a radio interview that highlighted the numerous ways artists are pivoting to keep their art seen, and their revenue flowing. For instance, musicians who faced canceled concerts offered up online concerts for free and requested just a small tip via Venmo. Artists moved their exhibits online, selling their pieces through freshly created websites. Theater and dance companies taped openings and performances offering them online for a small fee. Pivots created out of necessity born from the need to stay in business, pay employees, feed families or pay rent. I am inspired by their ability to adapt their typically in-person experience to something that was accessible to all regardless of distance (social or otherwise!)
Later that same day, I attended a Pinterest webinar where Jodi from Quay Glasses, shared that they, like any growth-minded business (mine included), had big marketing plans in place when this “Plot Twist” hit. I’m no newbie when it comes to business pivots , but can we just call this virus what it really is? A Plot TORNADO! And just like the winds that come with it, Quay Glasses decided this wasn’t actually a delay, but rather an acceleration of their plans.
Just think about it...we have seen businesses across the world change their way of selling to adjust to the new way of life introduced by COVID-19. What if these changes we see being made by so many small businesses were already in the cards? Either consciously or unconsciously...but this twister of a virus just blew it into being sooner. This acceleration created by COVID-19 might be forced, but is bringing about creative change, new skills and many think outside the box business aren’t just surviving, they are thriving!
Here are just a few small businesses who acted LARGE and made an impression on me with their acceleration!
I have always said, “Just like tacos and tequila, We’re Better Together!” I now more than ever believe that to be true! Here’s to thriving businesses, a flourishing planet, and people growing, even in the midst of a storm!
Be well,
Paula
Did you know that how you carry or care for your purse could be compromising your health? I'm sure you've felt the discomfort that comes with carrying a purse loaded down with too many items. My last blog post shared some pretty heavy stats (haha! see what I did there?), one of which was the average purse weighs nearly 7 pounds!
That brings us to health issue #1 - TOO HEAVY
Over time, carrying extra weight on your shoulders can lead to a myriad of health issues. Tension headaches or migraines are a real pain in the neck, but nothing compared to not feeling anything in your fingers thanks to pinched nerves in your shoulders! Other issues reported as being connected to carrying too much purse weight include compressed discs in your back, muscle spasms, neck and back pain, lopsided gait, and body lean.
The FIX:
-Carry less. I know, that's sometimes easier said than done. For some simple steps to an organized purse, check out my last blog post to help you audit out those unnecessary items.
-Invest in a lighter weight purse. Leather can be quite heavy, so choose a lightweight material (like cork eh?) Our most substantial bag, the Yvonne Convertible Tote is big on space yet weighs less than a pound and half. Yep, you read that right.
-Choose thicker straps on larger purses such as totes to help distribute weight across your shoulder. Speaking of dispersing weight, choosing a purse with compartments (or add your own with a lightweight purse organizer) can allow you to even out the weight you are carrying throughout your bag.
-Switch to a smaller purse. Much like the popular tiny house movement confines your belongings to only the essentials, using a smaller purse can help you identify that which you need for your day-to-day outings.
-Timeless designs not only let you stay on-trend no matter what is in fashion, it can also eliminate embellishments that add weight to what you are carrying. No matter how cute those tassels, chains, and extra pockets may look; I think we can all agree that health trumps haute couture any day!
**Fun Fact: Before I was an accessories designer, I was a personal stylist (actually, still am), and before that, I was a health and wellness exec, and before that, I was a personal trainer and group exercise coach. And stay tuned friends; because I have even more up my sleeve…due to repeated requests, I am launching a Style Curator section to my brand which will include home styling, and home accessory designs! I'm like the cat with nine lives...see what living healthy can do for you?
Issue #2 - SINGLE SIDED
Even if your purse isn't too heavy, carrying it on the same shoulder or arm can cause harm to your body. Some signs it's time to switch it up: indentations form on your shoulder, you are experiencing shoulder pain from hoisting your shoulder to keep the bag strap where it belongs, or you find your shoulder rolling forward and drooping.
The FIX:
-Sharing is caring...literally. Share the load by switching sides every 30 minutes or so.
-Take a load off. Put that purse down when you can!
-Take it back...way back to those school days! Opt for a backpack style, but keep it light and worn on both shoulders. Doing this will keep weight evenly distributed and less taxing on a single joint.
-Choose a crossbody style purse. Straps worn across the body allows the weight to disperse the length of your frame rather than placing the brunt of it on your shoulder. If you are looking for a stylish crossbody option, check out my Inizio, she is a stunner that is guaranteed to carry your load and feel light as a feather doing it!
Issue #3 - CROOKED CARRY
Tucking that bag into the crook of your arm to keep your hands free can be a dangerous way to carry your purse. It's known to cause tendinitis of the elbow, which is both painful and can cause long-term damage.
The FIX:
-Don't do it anymore! Haha! Really though, instead, carry your purse by hand, on your shoulder or across your body, remembering to switch sides every 30 minutes.
Issue #4 - FIND THE RIGHT FIT
Wearing a shoulder bag that doesn't fit your frame isn't just a fashion faux pas - it is potentially harmful to your health! Your purse should never be too short, or too long, as this can change your gait when you walk. Unless you want to be mistaken for Quasimoto when you are out and about, find a bag that’s not too large. Oversized bags can quickly fill up with unnecessary items and tend to overwhelm your frame at the same time.
The FIX:
-When worn on your shoulder or across your body, the top of your purse should align along your hipbone. Ideally, the size of your bag should match the size of your body frame. I have a whole guide on selecting accessories for your body type if you want some other ideas about what you should consider when pulling together an outfit.
Issue #5 - CLEANLINESS AND CARE
Addressing this issue feels especially timely during a season where the entire world is looking at their health habits. People are either patting themselves on the back for a job well done, or wondering how they managed to live as long as they have given their cavalier approach to cleaning their produce….
Let’s take a walk down memory lane...like waaaay back at the beginning of March when we all were still leaving our houses whenever we felt like it...you and your purse probably had quite the day together...car ride to Starbucks to grab a latte, where it slid off your chair to the ground when you sat down in the cafe. Then you head into the office, tossing your bag on your desk, or maybe the breakroom table. Then that purse went with you to the restaurant booth where you took your lunch meeting, even making a pit stop in their restroom before heading back to work. You probably made a stop off at Whole Foods on your way home, to grab a bottle of wine to have with dinner, tossing that bag into the cart while you shopped, and I bet you dropped it on your kitchen counter when you got home for the evening. Whew. No doubt you managed to do all that while washing your hands frequently and not touching your face.
But did you wash your purse after each stop? Yeah, I'm a self-professing germaphobe, and I have definitely been guilty of not thinking about sanitizing my purse but honestly, it touches just as many surfaces as my hands do!
The FIX:
Let's all start a movement to stop putting our purses on the floor! Also, wash them...and often! This is harder to do with leather; you will need to be careful and follow the recommended leather treatment from the bag manufacturer. BUT if you are looking for an option that is naturally antimicrobial then have I got a purse for you! Cork doesn't just have antibacterial properties; it is also soap and water washable! Just place your purse in the sink and gently scrub using warm water and mild soap. Natural baby wipes are also great for quick wipe downs or to remove marks left from wear and use. Check out my Instagram Cork Care highlights for some quick tutorials if you want some ideas for how easy it is to keep your cork looking like new!

I know what you may be thinking...my love of organizing is taking a very personal direction. A woman's purse is sacred space, tucked full of all kinds of treasures, right? Girl, unless you are Mary Poppins herself, that bag of yours isn't full of magic...it's full of stuff.
And stuff? Well, it's heavy!
]]>A recent study showed that the average purse weighs 6.7lbs. For reference, imagine carrying around a bag of sugar on one shoulder...so comfy! Now add in a few more pounds of "essentials," and you are hauling ten pounds of weight day in and day out. Soon enough, that heavy side haul is going to have you leaning like the infamous Tower of Pisa. Of course, you can toss out a few pounds of weight just by carrying a cork purse...I know a gal who makes them <wink, wink> if you need a hookup!
Asymmetric lines in fashion can be bold, sexy even, like my Inizio Satchel with her trendy asymmetrical front closure, but leaning to one side thanks to an overfull purse isn't what I'm talking about here girlfriend! Let's ditch the load (and the unnecessary and avoidable damage to our bodies) and find the freedom that comes from traveling light!
There are a few key reasons that cleaning out your purse is good for your health (aside from your posture!). Disarray causes stress. Clutter in a dark space that's hard to see into is a sure-fire way to feel your angst meter climb. Combing through stuff you don't use to find the few things that you do is a waste of time! How many times have you hunted for lost keys, going through your handbag, your house, the pockets of yesterday's jeans, only to finally find them at the bottom of your previously searched (messy) purse? Maybe you took a trip to Target to return that impulse purchase, only to turn back around because the receipt has gone MIA in the war zone that is the inside of your favorite bag?
Let's purge that purse, reduce some stress, and increase your available time. Plus, your neck, shoulders, and back will thank you! Are you with me?
Step 1: Dump out the entire contents of your purse onto a clutter-free counter or table-top. Your bed is also a great place to do this...you might as well get comfortable. This could take a while…
Step 2: Start with your wallet. Go through it one item at a time, asking of each, "Do I need this?" - if yes, create a KEEP pile. If no, make two piles, TOSS or PUT AWAY. Don't fill up that wallet just yet, though!
Step 3: If you have makeup pouches, go through Step 1 and 2 with them as well.
Step 4: Keep it going! Now audit all the remaining items in your purse until each piece has been sorted.
Step 5: Take a look at the items you now have in your keep pile and group them by like items (i.e., lip gloss, lotion, powder, pen, pad, and memory card.) Then place those like items together in your wallet, pouch, or a purse pocket.
Step 6: Neatly arrange all the remaining items into your purse. I am a huge fan of purse organizers like those made by ZTUJO, which are thoughtful, inexpensive and fit perfectly inside my Yvonne cork tote, seen below! You can see more of how I organize my tote on my IG accounts, @paulaparisotto or @paulaparisottostyle - just take a peek at the highlights under Cork Care or Organizing for a video of my process. Don’t worry, it’s filmed on time lapse - you know how I feel about saving people some time!
Step 7: Take that TOSS pile...and well, toss it (or recycle it. I'm all about that Reduce, Reuse, Recycle lifestyle!) Then put away the items that remain WHERE THEY BELONG. Resist the urge to tuck them into a draw to deal with later, really put them away.
Some fascinating exercises to try before you start:
Now that you have that weight off your back (literally), I'm sure you'll want to reduce some weight in other areas of your life. How can I help? Are there areas in your wardrobe, or elsewhere for that matter, that I can help you lighten up? Comment below.

If life is an adventure, then mine is one hell of an experience! Each year I take a week off over New Years to reflect on the previous year and make plans for the current year. I like to think of my annual plans as a loosely plotted road map for the upcoming year. I say loosely plotted because some of my most epic opportunities have come from going off-road, and while the trip may have been bumpy at times, I have never regretted where those roads took me!
]]>My week of reflection is done at our lake house, in solitude. Water soothes my soul and grounds me in a way that solid earth never could. While much of my week is spent in silence, letting words and thoughts wash over me, I will admit to having recently joined the Netflix bandwagon...so I did have the company of Grace and Frankie to lighten my deep contemplation!
Armed with snacks (Wheat Thins slathered in PB&J...mmm), steaming cups of tea, my pen, last year’s planner (OMG...if you need a planner, check out My Shining Year Life Goals Workbook, by Leonie Dawson. It’s pure GOLD!) and calendar (The Happy Planner, because who isn’t happy when they have a plan?!) along with a fresh copy of each, and I am ready to rock ‘n roll...or hum and snuggle as the case may be... Despite my cozy set up, this is one of my most productive weeks of the year. This week of work sets up an entire year of building and growing!
(side note, both of my favorites are available on Amazon if you are still looking for a planner to kick off the new year!)
2019 was a hell of a year to end a decade. I spent time in gratitude for what worked and even what didn’t. I celebrated both my successes and my failures (or life’s u-turns as I like to think of them- time to turn around and find a new route!) I reflected on my adventures, travels and the people that joined me on them. I remembered people lost...those who left the earth and the ones I choose to let go. I looked at how I spent my time and made note of the times that I found most fulfilling.
With my heart full of thanksgiving for 2019’s lessons, I started to plan for the new year. All of my goals fall under one primary mission: to live my best life. I set goals for my relationships, both family and friends. My health goals are set creating a space for self-care that nourishes my body, my soul and my mind. My business goals, finances, adventure, and home renovations, all come into support that mission of living a life that feels as good on the inside as it looks on the outside.
This process has been on repeat for the last five years. Sit, review, think, feel, create, write, organize and plan...then put those plans in motion!
2019 - Become - This year I wrote my story of how I grew from a wellness industry executive into a BRAND. I let myself truly become everything that I was meant to be, which included a renewed focus on becoming a better, healthier version of me. You know, letting go of the past so that I could be in charge of my present, and becoming an all-around badass boss babe!
And so….2020….my word for you is MORE. More adventure. More self-care. More mindfulness. More abundance. More moments that take my breath away, and more opportunities for gratitude. More clients. More growth for my brand. More hikes. More days at the beach. More tacos and definitely more margaritas.
To be honest, my girl Cori Lasshan from Vineyard Yoga SYV posted the word on Instagram and like a deep breath filling my lungs, MORE slipped in and filled my soul and outbreathed my new mantra, “Thank you Universe! MORE please!”
And then the Universe responded….in the fast-food drive-through of all places! My fav fast-food taco joint uses the slogan Live Mas! LIVE MORE! and when tacos speak, I listen. Amen. So with a taco in hand, humming my boy Billy Idol (seriously he’s my fav! I’ve seen him in concert 8 times!)....More, More More…..it just felt right.
Thank you Universe, MORE please!

“Money doesn't buy elegance. You can take an inexpensive sheath, add a pretty scarf, gray shoes, and a wonderful bag, and it will always be elegant.”
- Carolina Herrera
]]>Modern-day style maven, Carolina Herrera knows all about iconic style, but her advice isn’t new. In fact, scarves have been a gender-neutral accessory since ancient Egypt. The original Goddess of Glam, Queen Nefertiti, was said to be the first to make them fashionable, while early Chinese military followed suit, using their scarves to denote position and rank.
Perhaps the second most practical accessory (the handbag arguably being the first!) scarves, have long been used to serve purpose as well as fashion. From warmth to managing hair, scarves have woven their way into our hearts and closets with the help of some friends who have made this fashionable accent famous: Jackie O., Freida Kahlo, Audrey Hepburn, Queen Victoria, StevenTyler, Harry Potter, and Frosty the Snowman are a few that come to mind...but with the help of my stylish scarf-wearing tips, your name will be added to that list in no time!
You all know I LOVE accessories...so much so, I have a whole business around it. By chance you wandered here through a deep dive into the internet, you should totally go check out my line of sustainably sourced cork handbags, belts, and earrings! Our GiGi looks très chic when paired with a sleek shift dress and dainty neck scarf!
Of course, you know that scarves come in a variety of colors, textures, shapes, and sizes...but did you know there are so many clever ways to wear a scarf around your neck? Here is my favorite tutorial - Wendy can move quite quickly through the styles so it’s best to pause every few seconds to try the styles on your own. She is just so creative and I thoroughly enjoy watching her tips and I am sure you will too!
A few other ways to wear a scarf that Wendy didn’t cover:
Our totes and satchels just scream “accessorize me!” - The only question is, cotton, linen or silk? I’d love to see how you make your bag your own. Tag us on Instagram with #getcorky so we can share your unique style with our fellow followers and fans!
P.S. When I started Paula Parisotto Cork Collection, I fell madly in love with the brand patterns creatively crafted for me by the brand genius Melinda from Marks & Maker. I quickly trademarked them with the intention to make silk and/or cotton scarves….so tell me, what colors would you want to see most? Maybe it’s time to add an accessories line to my accessories line!

The air is crisp, bells are ringing outside of shopping malls, lights and tinsel are appearing around windows and doors. The sights and sounds (and smells...hello fresh jam filled butter cookies!) of the season have us feeling warm, cozy, and generous! No wonder we call this the season of giving and receiving….but aren’t we always in a season of giving and receiving?
]]>The universe gives us fresh water to drink, food to eat, air to breath, light to warm us, and darkness to give us rest. We are given nature’s music: birds singing, wind in the trees, and the glorious gift that is Taylor Swift. Daily we experience so many good and perfect gifts….but what’s that saying? It’s better to give than receive.
But I do so LOVE to receive! Tacos of most any kind, shoes (mostly of the heeled kind), a trip to Greece...just in case I’m on your Secret Santa list, I want you to have options! I gratefully receive it! I am learning to apply that same joy to daily giving, as well. Sometimes giving can feel like a loss (I’m looking at you, Mr. Electric Bill!)...but it doesn’t have to be that way! I recently began to thank each bill as I send off the money for the benefit I received from it.
“Thank you, gas-bill for the ability to wash and dry my clothing, to cook meals and heat my home.”
“Thank you, IT team member, for allowing me to do what I do best and not worry about my website.”
“Thank you, Dr. Lori, for educating me on the fact that I am perimenopausal and not losing my mind!” --Anyone else out there who knows what I’m talking about?
When you think of money as an energy flow, gratitude for what you are giving and receiving comes more naturally. Money gratefully given will circulate back into our lives, often five or ten times more than we gave.
The same is true with other forms of giving. The more joyfully and unconditionally your gifts of time, attention, love, and care you give, the more you will receive in return. I don’t know about you, but I can always use more time, affection, and care in my life. Happy endorphins are addicting...let’s put them out there freely and often! Better to give than receive, am I right?
So cheers (lifting a mug of spiked eggnog in your general direction!) to not only this giving and receiving season, but to gratefully giving and receiving each day of each week this coming year!
To celebrate, I've put together a list of financially free giving to help you kick-off your season of gratitude:
o Compliments
o Smiles
o Hugs
o Laughter
o Prayers
o Your time
o Your full attention
Have more ideas on how to give freely and without reservation? Tell me below! I want to hear them!
